Fall is one of the best times to be in the garden, and we’re celebrating with a full day of plants, nature, community, learning, and family fun at the Fall Fred Fair at Fred Heutte Garden!

Spend the day wandering the garden, shopping for beautiful plants, meeting some of Hampton Roads’ most interesting gardening and environmental organizations, taking a garden tour, and letting the kids loose in a fantastic activity-filled Kid’s Zone. Whether you’re an experienced gardener, a houseplant fanatic, a parent looking for a great Saturday outing, or someone who simply loves spending time outdoors, there will be plenty to see and do.

Plants, Plants & More Plants

Of course, it wouldn’t be a Fred Fair without gorgeous plants at fantastic prices.

Our fall plant sale will be packed with healthy, beautiful plants ready for autumn gardens, porches, patios, and containers. Look for colorful pansies and snapdragons, perennials, fruiting plants, and other seasonal favorites, all at the kind of prices that make it very easy to go home with more than you planned.

Fall is an ideal planting season in Hampton Roads, so it’s a wonderful opportunity to fill some holes in the garden, refresh your containers, or simply treat yourself to something new.

Meet the Experts

The Fall Fred Fair is also a chance to meet the people doing fascinating work throughout our community. We’ll be joined by an outstanding collection of local plant societies, environmental organizations, educators, and nonprofits, including the Tidewater African Violet Society, Tidewater Orchid Society, Tidewater Compost, Virginia Master Naturalists, The Downtown Branch at the Slover, and many more.

Come with questions! Learn more about orchids and African violets, composting, native plants, wildlife, conservation, gardening, and the natural world around us. Discover organizations you may not know, find new ways to get involved in your community, and meet people who are every bit as enthusiastic about plants and nature as we are.

A Fantastic Kid’s Zone

Bring the kids, because we’ll have a Kid’s Zone filled with activities galore.

Children can jump into hands-on activities, make something to take home, explore, play with giant bubbles, join in with our giant play parachute, and enjoy plenty of opportunities to move, create, discover, and have fun.

The Fred believes that one of the best ways to raise future gardeners and nature lovers is simply to give children opportunities to get outside, get curious, get their hands busy, and have a wonderful time. The Kid’s Zone is designed to do exactly that.

Explore Fred Heutte Garden

If you’ve never really explored Fred Heutte Garden—or you’ve always wondered about a particular tree, planting, or corner of the property—this is the perfect day to do it.

We’ll offer Garden Tours throughout the fair, giving visitors a closer look at this remarkable public garden, its plants and trees, its history, and the work being done to keep it thriving and growing for the community.

You can also simply wander. Find a shady spot, discover a part of the garden you’ve never noticed before, talk with our volunteers, and enjoy an October day surrounded by green.

And while you’re here, learn more about the Fred’s expanding community work, including our free children’s programming, volunteer opportunities, educational events, garden projects, and the many ways this little garden serves Norfolk throughout the year.

Make a Day of It

We want the Fall Fred Fair to be easy, relaxed, welcoming, and fun. There will be plentiful parking, lots to explore, plenty for children to do, beautiful plants to take home, interesting people to meet, and five full hours to enjoy it all.

Come for the plants and stay for the garden. Come to learn something new. Bring the kids. Bring a friend. Meet some of the organizations doing great work in our region. Take a garden tour. Ask questions. Fill your car with plants.
