The Friends of Fred Heutte Foundation is a dedicated nonprofit organization committed to fostering horticultural education and promoting the beautification of South Hampton Roads. Drawing inspiration from the legacy of Fred Heutte, a visionary horticulturist and advocate for community greening, the Foundation works to cultivate a deeper understanding and appreciation of sustainable gardening practices. Through educational programs and volunteer opportunities, the organization empowers individuals and communities to adopt environmentally responsible landscaping techniques, ensuring a healthier and more vibrant ecosystem for future generations.

At the heart of the Foundation’s mission is a focus on sustainability and best environmental practices. Whether it's through the creation of lush public gardens, partnerships with local schools, or outreach events, the Friends of Fred Heutte Foundation serves as a steward for environmental awareness in the region. By blending education with action, the Foundation not only enhances the natural beauty of South Hampton Roads but also inspires residents to take an active role in preserving the environment. Through its work, the organization continues to honor Fred Heutte’s vision of transforming urban spaces into verdant havens that enrich both the community and the planet.

The Foundation was founded in 1980 and is housed in the Old Ferry Terminal Building, now located in the heart of Ghent Square in Norfolk, Virginia’s Historic Ghent Neighborhood. This uniquely beautiful historic structure, constructed in 1887 at the site of the old Commercial Place, served Norfolk-Portsmouth ferry riders until 1952. The building was disassembled, stored and later reconstructed as the centerpiece of Fred Heutte Garden, City Park.

The Friends of Fred Heutte Foundation relies on the generous support of individuals like you to continue its mission of promoting horticultural education, sustainability, and environmental stewardship in South Hampton Roads. Your contributions help maintain the Fred Heutte Center as a hub for horticultural education and urban natural beauty. By supporting the Foundation, you play a vital role in preserving Fred Heutte’s vision of creating thriving green spaces that benefit both people and the planet.
