A message from Norfolk Master Gardeners

In conjunction with the Fred Heutte Center’s 2nd Annual Pumpkin and Pansy Sale on Saturday 28 September, we invite you to a special, Square Foot Gardening Demonstration Garden Open House. Come out and meet with our team to learn more about Square Foot Gardening as well as to discuss all things veggie garden, from seasonal growing, pests, successes, and the like. We’ll be there Saturday 28 September from 10 AM to 3 PM.

Our Square Foot Gardening Demonstration Garden is well into the transition to fall garden vegetables.  With the enthusiastic assistance of Montessori Ghent 7th and 8th graders, we just planted 432 transplants of Cabbage, Kale, Collards, Broccoli and Cauliflower. We still have some Japanese eggplant, bell pepper, zucchini and green beans to harvest. We’re also starting to test the yield of our grow bag planted sweet potatoes. Our garden has produced over 1,800 pounds in donations to the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia so far this year.
